ABOUT SYMONDS FORECOURTS
The Symonds business started in Bruton in the 1950s as a small grocery store run by Tom and Aylene Symonds.
Alan Symonds, their son, diversified and began a wholesale business in the 1960s at the shop using a spare room as the 'warehouse' . Quickly he outgrew this arrangement and rented the church rooms in Bruton and employed his first member of staff. Alan moved to Street and spent his time travelling around Somerset in his Austin 35 delivering to local stores - his first office was a downstairs cupboard in a house still lived in by members of the extended family.
Alan went on to open his first proper warehouse in Pen Mill, Yeovil in 1965. The business continued growing and moved into its own purpose built 37,000 sq ft distribution centre in Yeovil in 1992 and was by now employing over 100 staff, with a fleet of 15 delivery lorries and turning over more than £60m a year.
During the mid 1990's Alan's son Jeremy diversified the business again into retail and developed a network of stores under the Smile brand. At its peak the Symonds Wholesale Group was distributing to over 800 customers and 100 petrol forecourts and Smile operated with 100 convenience stores.
In 2007 the business was successfully sold, and focus was then placed on developing a chain of petrol forecourts. The business has quickly grown to 9, and is ranked in the top 50 Indie Forecourt operators in the UK, and was recognised in 2012 as Forecourt Trader of the Year.
In preparing for future growth, the property arm of the business recently acquired and developed a 40,000 sq ft office block in the centre of Yeovil, which is our new base.
The principles of the business have been founded on long term relationship with employees, customers, suppliers and partners. This has enabled us to consistently deliver excellence.
